UK Pet Import Guide

Shipping a Pet to the United Kingdom from the USA

The United Kingdom enforces strict pet import regulations to protect its rabies-free status. Dogs, cats, and ferrets traveling from the United States to England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland must meet a specific set of health and documentation requirements -- and since Brexit, the UK follows its own Great Britain pet travel rules, separate from the EU scheme.

The good news: the UK is one of the more straightforward international pet destinations compared to Japan, Australia, or South Korea. There is no titer test requirement and no mandatory quarantine for pets that meet all entry conditions. The typical preparation timeline is 2-3 months, though families with pets whose rabies vaccines have lapsed will need additional time.

The Pet Porters manages the complete UK pet relocation process -- from microchip verification and USDA APHIS health certificate coordination to airline cargo booking through British Airways IAG Cargo and arrival at the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre.

Post-Brexit Pet Travel Rules: Since January 2021, Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) no longer participates in the EU pet travel scheme. Pets traveling from the USA to Great Britain must use the Great Britain-format health certificate -- not the EU health certificate. Northern Ireland follows different rules and remains aligned with EU pet travel regulations. If your destination is Northern Ireland, contact us for specific guidance.

Step-by-Step Requirements

UK Pet Import Requirements -- In the Correct Sequence

Each step must be completed in order. Vaccinations given before microchipping are not accepted. The sequence determines your minimum preparation timeline.

1
ISO Microchip -- Must Come First

Your pet must be implanted with an ISO 11784/11785 microchip before any rabies vaccination is administered. UK border officials use the microchip to verify your pet's identity against their health documentation. If the microchip was implanted after the vaccination, the vaccination is not considered valid for UK entry.

If your pet already has a microchip, verify it is ISO-compatible. Non-ISO chips (common in older pets microchipped in the U.S.) may not be readable by UK border scanners. In that case, a second ISO chip may need to be implanted, and the vaccination sequence must follow the new chip.

Do This First Must be completed before rabies vaccination. If already microchipped with an ISO chip, verify compatibility before proceeding.
2
Rabies Vaccination Starts the 21-Day Clock

A valid rabies vaccination administered after microchipping is required for all dogs, cats, and ferrets entering the UK.

  • Must be administered after the microchip is implanted
  • Pets must wait a minimum of 21 days after vaccination before entering the UK
  • The first vaccination is typically valid for one year
  • Boosters: If current boosters are kept up to date within the manufacturer's licensed interval, the 21-day wait is not required again -- your pet can travel sooner on booster renewals
  • Boosters are typically valid for three years depending on the vaccine used
Key Timing Rule If this is your pet's first rabies vaccination, you cannot travel to the UK for at least 21 days after the injection. Plan your vet visit at least 3-4 weeks before your earliest possible departure date.
3
Great Britain-Format Health Certificate

This is where post-Brexit rules make a significant difference. Pets traveling to Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) must use the specific Great Britain health certificate format -- not the EU TRACES health certificate used before Brexit or the EU format still used for Northern Ireland.

  • Must be issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian
  • Must be completed on the correct GB format -- Form GB-2
  • Must be completed within 10 days of departure
  • Must confirm microchip number, vaccination date and validity, and tapeworm treatment (for dogs)
  • Certificate is valid for 10 days from issue date for entry into GB, then 4 months for onward travel within GB
Timing Issued within 10 days of departure. Do not complete it earlier -- it will expire before your travel date.
4
USDA APHIS Government Endorsement

The completed Great Britain health certificate must be officially endorsed by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). This government stamp authenticates the veterinarian's certificate for international acceptance.

  • Submit to the appropriate USDA APHIS Veterinary Export Trade Services office (varies by state)
  • Processing typically takes 1-3 business days -- rush options available in some states
  • Must be submitted immediately after the health certificate is issued -- do not delay
  • We manage the endorsement submission and tracking on your behalf
Timing Submit immediately after health certificate is issued. Processing + return shipping must fit within the 10-day health certificate validity window.
5
Tapeworm Treatment Dogs Only

Dogs entering the United Kingdom must receive an approved tapeworm treatment to protect against Echinococcus multilocularis, a tapeworm species not present in the UK. This requirement does not apply to cats.

  • Must be administered between 24 and 120 hours (1-5 days) before arrival in the UK
  • Must be effective against Echinococcus multilocularis -- praziquantel is the approved active ingredient
  • Must be administered by a licensed veterinarian
  • Must be recorded on the health certificate by the vet before USDA endorsement
Critical Window Between 24 and 120 hours before UK arrival. Too early or too late and the treatment is not valid. Coordinate this at your pre-departure vet visit.
6
Airline Booking & Heathrow Animal Reception Centre

Pets traveling to the UK from the USA must arrive through an approved entry point. Most pets enter via Heathrow Airport and are processed at the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre (HARC) -- the mandatory arrival facility for all animals entering the UK by air.

  • British Airways IAG Cargo is the primary carrier for UK-bound pet cargo from the U.S.
  • Pets travel as manifest cargo -- not in-cabin or as excess baggage on most routes
  • HARC veterinary staff review documentation and perform a health inspection on arrival
  • Owner collects pet at HARC after clearance -- not at the general baggage claim
  • We coordinate booking directly with IAG Cargo and advise on HARC collection procedures
Arrival Point London Heathrow (LHR) — Heathrow Animal Reception Centre. Not Edinburgh, Manchester, or other UK airports for most U.S. routes.

Planning Timeline

UK Pet Transport Timeline

The UK is one of the faster international pet destinations to prepare for. The main variable is whether your pet's rabies vaccination is current.

Pet Has Current Rabies Vaccination

If your pet is already microchipped with an ISO chip and has a current, in-date rabies booster, the preparation timeline is significantly shorter.

  • 4-6 Wk.Schedule vet visit, confirm all records
  • 10 DaysHealth certificate issued by USDA-accredited vet
  • ASAPUSDA APHIS endorsement submitted
  • 1-5 DaysTapeworm treatment (dogs) before UK arrival
  • TravelPet departs -- arrives at Heathrow HARC
Pet Needs First Rabies Vaccination

If your pet has never been vaccinated for rabies, or if the previous vaccine has expired, the 21-day post-vaccination wait applies and extends the minimum timeline.

  • 8-10 Wk.Microchip implant (if needed)
  • 8 Wk.First rabies vaccination -- 21-day clock starts
  • 3-4 Wk.21-day wait period completes
  • 10 DaysHealth certificate + USDA APHIS endorsement
  • 1-5 DaysTapeworm treatment (dogs)
  • TravelPet departs -- Heathrow HARC arrival

Common Questions

UK Pet Transport FAQ

No -- the UK does not require a rabies antibody titer test for pets traveling from the United States. This is one of the key differences between the UK and high-complexity destinations like Japan, Australia, and South Korea, which all require titer testing with mandatory waiting periods. For the UK, a valid rabies vaccination and the Great Britain health certificate are the primary requirements.
For most transatlantic routes from the U.S. to the UK, pets must travel as manifest cargo -- not in-cabin. British Airways does not allow pets in the cabin on international long-haul routes. Pets travel via IAG Cargo and are processed at the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre on arrival. Small pets that would normally qualify for in-cabin travel on domestic U.S. routes cannot use that option for the transatlantic leg.
The Heathrow Animal Reception Centre (HARC) is the mandatory arrival and processing facility for all animals entering the United Kingdom by air. Government veterinary staff review documentation, perform health inspections, and coordinate customs clearance at HARC before pets are released to their owners. Every pet traveling to the UK by cargo passes through HARC regardless of airline. Owners collect their pets at HARC -- not at the general baggage claim terminal.
No -- the tapeworm treatment requirement applies to dogs only. Cats entering the UK do not require tapeworm treatment. The treatment protects against Echinococcus multilocularis, a tapeworm species that does not affect cats in the same way. Dogs must receive the treatment between 24 and 120 hours (1-5 days) before arrival, administered by a licensed vet and recorded on the health certificate.
Yes -- Northern Ireland remains aligned with EU pet travel regulations under the Windsor Framework, while Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) uses its own post-Brexit rules. Pets traveling to Northern Ireland from the USA may need to use EU-format health certificates rather than the Great Britain format. This is an important distinction that affects documentation. Contact us with your specific destination and we will advise on the correct certificate format.
